Peace Walker: Robin & Tennis Balls

Peace Walker

My sister, Robin, has loved using a walker for several years. Her walker has given her peace in several ways:

Lately Robin complained that her walker wasn’t working right.  She said it wouldn’t go straight. I noticed her path constantly veered some 15° northeast. Curbs, walls, other residents might be grazed by Robin’s walker as she passed them by. Robin would lift the walker, set it straight, and forge on. She blamed it on the  walker’s wheels. We switched walkers; same problem. And with a third.

I blamed it on Robin’s equilibrium. Seemed to me she’d had that 15° tack for years.

Then at the latest Care Meeting, Jameson, Robin’s fave Nursing Assistant, told me he’d put new tennis balls on her walker. “Now, Robin is thrilled that it moves where she wants it to move. Those tennis balls have given her lots of peace. Us, too.”

I call it her Peace Walker.

How often our reliance on things gives us peace. Occasionally something shifts and the reliance goes away. So does the peace.

When we repair the shift, the peace returns. We can walk that peace again. Robin’s focuses now only on how straight her walker takes her.

Guiding Spirit,
you grant us each our own Peace Walker.
You give us faith that we can find our path,
mark our way, and move on
without fear or stumble or burden.
And if our walking veers
to one side or the other
off course
uncertain
you give us resource
that puts us back on track.
Tennis balls. Trail guide.
Small voice within our Being.
Infinite ways you let us know how we command
our own Peace Walk.
And so it is. And so with gratitude we say
Amen. Amen.

Enjoy Peace. Express Peace.
