Expressing Peace. Prayer for Protection. 37.
More people than the folks who attend a Unity church are familiar with James Dillet Freeman’s Prayer for Protection:
The light of God surrounds us;
the love of God enfolds us;
the power of God protects us;
the presence of God watches over us;
Wherever we are, God is!
I cannot recall any Unity service that doesn’t include (usually conclude with) this prayer. There’s never been a time when I’ve heard or said the prayer and not felt Peace filling me.
I love that a poem can bring me such awareness of Peace without mentioning the word. I love that the four nouns: light, love, power, and presence bring about such Peace.
And I recently learned that James Dillet Freeman originally wrote this prayer for a Christmas service in 1940:
The light of Christ directs me;
The love of Christ enfolds me;
The power of Christ protects me;
The presences of Christ upholds me.
What a treat to hear the prayer referencing the Christ. And knowing the Christ within me.
Shortly after, responding to another prayer request, Freeman recalled this version. With thought (and prayer, I’m sure) he rewrote it as we know it now.
I encourage you to say the Prayer for Protection. Say it aloud. Say the original “Christ version.” Enjoy the Peace I’m sure you’ll feel from both.
The light of God surrounds me; the light of Christ directs me;
The love of God enfolds me; the love of Christ enfolds me;
The power of God protectsme; the power of Christ protects me;
The presence of God watches over me; the presence of Christ upholds me.
Wherever I am, God is. Wherever I am, Christ is.
Enjoy Peace. Express Peace.
