For Humiliation
I have prayed for years for one good humiliation a day,
and then I must watch my reaction to it. (Richard Rohr)
I love and am frightened by Richard Rohr’s praying for humiliation. The idea is awesome, the opportunities for self-awareness and growth are tremendous. A daily dose of humiliation can help me see the difference between who I pretend to be and who I really am.
And that is so, so scary. Coming face to face with my Self is both what I long to do and a prospect I loathe. Can’t say I hope you feel the same way.
I can say, that dichotomy has helped me take on this prayer:
Spirit, you are my best friend.
Relieved and safe-feeling I’m glad you know me truly
and completely.
I affirm and thank you in anticipation
that you will guide me to see my personal True Self.
And I affirm and thank you for showing me
ways to shed my ego,
affirm and thank you for giving me
the strength of letting go
and throwing away the costumes I’ve created
and worn so many years.
Good Friend, I am pleased you let me
more and more accept each day’s humiliation:
open it, explore it, feel its pulse in me
that I may grow in comfort of who I Am.
And so it is. Amen.
Great love and blessings!
