Who wants a prayer partner? and why?
Having a prayer partner is a true God-gift.
And finding a prayer partner is much easier than you might think.
Let’s start with the “Why?” (like so many rational folks do!) As in, why have a prayer partner? (And a little later we’ll even look at why have more than prayer partner!)
The major reasons I come up with for having a prayer partner all deal with POWER. In a perfectly good sense of the word.
Partnering with someone to share praying, to grow and gain from your praying produces these powers:
- The power of praying. Praying has been described as the most creative way to communicate with God. By engaging with someone else in the creativity and the communication, you can experience an awesome sense of power from the simple act of praying. That feeling of power may translate as energy, enthusiasm, ability, strength, security, well-being…. That list could go on pretty indefinitely. Those feelings come from just praying, sure. But you know how much higher your high, happier your happy, and richer your richness when you share them with someone else. And when they share theirs with you!
- The power of numbers. “Whenever two or three…” How true that is. Get two or more people together and ideas spark. Thoughts couple and multiply. Energy “exponentiates”. That happens when you and someone else come together to pray. The number of things you can pray about spark in your mind and in your heart. The thoughts your God-minds enjoy before, during, and after the prayer can be like super-charged fuel for your spiritual awareness. Praying with someone else brings power to the prayer action just by increasing the number of pray-ers.
- The power of sharing. As the previous Power bullet implies, there’s a feeling of “I can do it” that flows naturally from the sense that “We can do it!” Sharing in praying conveys both can-do’s. When two people team up to share a prayer for one person’s concerns, they receive the power from the praying, sure. But they also receive (and enjoy) the power that comes from sharing. The giving and receiving that are sharing create a victorious cycle that continuously refuels itself.
- The power of plus. Synergy is when the parts add up to more than their expected sum. I say a prayer and you say a prayer and that is good. But when I say a prayer with you and you say a prayer with me, we’ve both enjoyed two prayers. And in addition we’ve enjoyed the experience of the beauty of prayer with someone else. That’s hard to beat.
Why find and pray with a prayer partner? There is power in doing it. Lots of power.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, we’ll look at what can be given to and gained from a prayer partnership. Join us.
