Morning Prayer 28. Love
Love gets loads of attention. It also gets short-shrift sometimes. Maybe that’s because we look and talk about love from so many different perspectives.
Saturday I drove to pick up my sister Robin from Marbridge, her assisted living home. Beautiful sunny, light traffic day. Easy breezy 30 mile drive from home to way south Austin. Earlier that morning I’d written in my Top Ten Thankful Tankful, “I am thankful I’ll visit Robin today.”
We drove to lunch at Chuy’s and Robin’s fave, the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo. A charming hostess seated us almost immediately. A friendly, eager-to-make-your-meal-enjoyable serving person took our order. The food arrived warm, attractive, and in short order.
And somewhere amid all of that, my good feelings that I have a sister and that I am able to spend frequent time with her dissolved. Don’t know when or why. I was just at once aware that I didn’t feel the love.
Certainly not Robin’s fault. She was digging into the cheese enchilada. She was answering my every question. She was as glad as she always is to enjoy a change of scenery, a spot of time away from The Villa at Marbridge. I was working hard to hide my sudden grumps.
By the time Robin had polished off the Elvis Combo and we’d shared a big slice of tres leches cake, I was feeling guilty at whatever selfishness sat on my shoulders. By now conversation gaps were longer, heavier.
We headed back to Robin’s home. I drove and she became quiet. She normally does on the return ride. I looked over and noticed her hands crossed calmly in her lap and her eyes turned down, almost closed.
She felt my gaze, looked up a me and said, “I love you.”
Loving Spirit,
the beautiful ways you let us know love
serve perfectly as evidence of your Love,
as testament that you are Love,
as assurance that we are made from the same Love.
The tenderness of loving one another
flows endlessly through our hearts.
The wonder of affirming love with
or words and deeds allows us to know
it with our minds.
The human power to let go of feeling love
is our decision, choice, and error.
Your Spirit gift that we know your Love
and translate it to love for one another
is your gift, presence, and grace.
For all the Love you give
and all the Love we are
that is the Love we share,
thank you, God.
And so it is. Amen.
Love and blessings,
