Where Peace Begins…

I love you. Please forgive me. Thank you.

That is the ho’oponopono prayer.

Allegedly ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of family or group therapy based on shared forgiveness. Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, a kahuna  (healing priest), was a well-known practitioner under whom trained Ihaleakala Hew Len, PhD. Hew Len shifted from Simeona’s group approach to an individual practice of applying the ho’oponopono prayer for oneself.

The simplest statement of the ho’oponopono is this:

The process of letting go of toxic elements within you to allow the impact of Divine thoughts, words, deeds and actions.

Our memories, thoughts, and emotions generate the experience that we live. We have the choice to approach our daily lives with reference to the memories and perceptions we have learned/developed or to be led by those Divine thoughts, words and actions. Perhaps another word for “memories”, in this context, is “concerns” or “issues” or even “fears.” Those can be too readily filled with the toxi elements. Keep in mind the Third Principle of Unity:

The way we are thinking determines our experiences, our “reality.”

Consider the opposite. Consider living according to Divine Inspiration. That occurs when we are free of the bond of memories. That allows us to give to God the power to Inspire us. Actually, we are not giving God the power; we are giving to ourselves the power and freedom to recognize and receive God’s inspiration. We are opening our Selves to receive from the Divine Self. And as we do that, we are allowing ourselves to experience being timeless, boundless, endless (infinite), deathless.

From a pure Faith standpoint, knowing how this occurs is unimportant.  But as humans, we may want to know. Here’s the simple explanation from Hew Len. Saying the ho’oponopono prayer to God and experiencing the forgiveness neutralizes that toxic energy. That neutralized energy is then released to the universe, dispersed and dissolved. That energy is replaced by Divine energy: Love, Light,Jjoy. (Hey, we know that nature doesn’t like a vacuum!).

So, what about those memories and thoughts? We’re not referring to the good memories (Christmas mornings, baby’s first step, a clear spring sky). We’re thinking of those erroneous thoughts that create a reality from misperceptions. These may be the erroneous thoughts about money, health, weight, children, employment, relationships, world peace, homeless people, the blister on my heel, what we’ll say to our boss at work….Memories…

Any time, every time we experience the “pain” of those memories, thoughts, we need only say to God

I love you. Please forgive me. Thank you.

The statement to God, I love you, can only improve oneself. Improving oneself can only improve the world. Realizing our forgiveness (the consciousness that we are of Spirit, that we are Divine ourselves) is the neutralization of toxic energy. Thank you is the joyful reception of the Divine Inspiration, the peace and understanding that free us from those “memories.”

NOTE: The ho’oponopono prayer as expressed on numerous websites, in Joe Vitalle’s book Zero Limits, and from Hew Len’s seminars and publications is typically expressed:

I love you. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

I have consciously removed the “I am sorry” for two reasons: (1) the request for forgiveness says it clearly enough and (2) the statement “I’m sorry” contradicts the Truth that we are of Spirit and replete with Divinity.

I hope you will find time and energy to meet feelings of concern or fear, of doubt or frustration by simply stating the ho’oponopono prayer. Perhaps several times. Remember that you are saying it to God, not to the doubt or the cause of the fear. You are speaking the prayer to allow those “erroneous thoughts” to be neutralized, then released, that their place in your mind may be filled with Divine Love and Light.

From there it’s pure Inspiration!
